Solar Planning Starts at the Electrical Service

Solar panels generate power on the roof, but the electrical panel and service determine how that power connects to the home. Reviewing the existing system before signing a solar contract can prevent redesigns, delays, and unexpected upgrade costs.

Check the Panel and Main Service

The electrician should verify the panel rating, available breaker space, busbar limitations, service conductors, grounding, and condition of the equipment. A damaged or obsolete panel may need to be replaced before solar interconnection is approved.

Plan for the Whole Home

Consider planned loads at the same time: an EV charger, heat pump, electric range, pool equipment, workshop tools, or an accessory dwelling unit. A load calculation can show whether the service should be upgraded now rather than paying for a second electrical project later.

Backup Batteries and Transfer Equipment

Battery storage and backup systems add equipment, disconnects, and control requirements. They should be planned with the solar installer and a licensed electrician so the system can be safely isolated and serviced.

Permits and Utility Coordination

Solar electrical work requires permits, inspections, and utility approval. Keep copies of the final plans, inspection approval, equipment information, and updated panel schedule for future service.
