Heat Pumps & Induction: Electrical Planning for LA Homes

Planning a heat pump or induction range in Los Angeles? Review circuits, panel capacity, permits, and local program eligibility before buying equipment.

Heat Pumps & Induction: Electrical Planning for LA Homes

Do heat pumps and induction ranges require new electrical work?

Quick answer: They may. Before replacing gas equipment with a heat pump, induction range, or electric water heater, an electrician should review the equipment's electrical specifications, existing circuits, and the home's calculated load. New circuits may be needed, but a panel upgrade is not automatic.

LA homeowners often plan these purchases separately: a kitchen remodel now, a heat pump later, and an EV charger next year. Reviewing the combined plan can prevent repeated electrical work and equipment that arrives before the home is ready to power it.

Start with equipment specifications, not a breaker guess

A full-size induction range commonly uses a dedicated higher-voltage circuit; a portable countertop unit can have different requirements. Heat pumps also vary by size and design, and electric backup heat can change the electrical demand substantially.

Ask your appliance supplier or HVAC contractor for the manufacturer's installation instructions and electrical ratings. Give those documents to the electrician before selecting a breaker or cable. A circuit must suit the equipment and wiring, not simply fit an empty panel slot.

Does my existing panel have enough capacity?

Physical space for a breaker does not prove that the service can carry the added load. The assessment should consider existing heating and cooling, cooking, water heating, laundry, EV charging, and any planned ADU or addition.

An older 100-amp service might need improvement, but some homes can accommodate carefully selected equipment without a service upgrade. Available options depend on a proper load calculation, equipment choices, and local requirements. Do not assume every home needs 200 amps or that load management is suitable for every project.

A practical planning checklist for LA homeowners

  • List the electric appliances you want now and within the next few years.
  • Collect equipment ratings and installation instructions.
  • Have the panel condition, service capacity, grounding, and existing circuits evaluated.
  • Plan cable routes before cabinets, walls, or landscaping are finished.
  • Confirm permit and inspection responsibilities with the installer.
  • Coordinate electrical work with the HVAC contractor and appliance installer.
  • Verify any incentive's eligibility and approval rules before purchasing equipment.

Homes in Tarzana, Encino, and Sherman Oaks may have very different circuit layouts despite being in the same region. Your utility also matters: LADWP, Southern California Edison, and municipal utilities have different programs and service processes.

LA programs: check the details before expecting a rebate

The County of Los Angeles announced an Equitable Building Decarbonization (EBD) program for income-qualified households in selected Southern California communities. Its announced priority communities include North Hollywood and Pacoima. Potential upgrades include heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, induction ranges, and electric dryers, along with efficiency work. Priority-community status alone does not establish household eligibility.

LADWP's HOME LA pilot is a separate program. The official page currently limits participation to qualifying properties rebuilding after specified January 2025 wildfires, within LADWP service territory. It is not a general rebate available to every LA homeowner, and approval is required before construction or installation.

Program rules, funding, eligible equipment, and availability can change. Contact the program directly for current requirements. SM Electric does not determine eligibility, promise an award, or claim to be an approved EBD installer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install an induction range on my old gas-range outlet?

Not without checking the exact equipment. A receptacle previously used only for a gas range's controls may not provide the voltage or capacity required by a full-size induction appliance.

Will electrification always lower my utility bill?

No. Results depend on equipment efficiency, usage, utility rates, insulation, and what is being replaced. Compare the complete household energy costs rather than assuming that changing fuel alone guarantees savings.

Who handles the electrical part of a heat pump installation?

A licensed electrician coordinates circuits and service needs with the HVAC installer. The HVAC contractor selects and installs the heating/cooling equipment; both should agree on the electrical specifications before work begins.
