A Seasonal Electrical Check Prevents Surprises

As temperatures change and families use heaters, lighting, kitchen appliances, and entertainment equipment more often, fall is a good time to review the home's electrical system. A short safety check can reveal problems before the first busy weekend or storm.

Test Safety Devices

Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, replace batteries as recommended, and replace expired units. Press the TEST button on GFCI devices in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor areas. If a device will not reset or trips repeatedly, call an electrician.

Inspect Heating Equipment and Outlets

Keep portable heaters away from curtains and furniture, plug them directly into a wall outlet, and stop using any outlet that becomes hot or discolored. Do not use power strips or extension cords as permanent heater wiring.

Check Exterior Lighting

Replace damaged outdoor cords, use weather-rated fixtures, and make sure walkways and entrances are visible. Never use indoor-rated lights outdoors or leave connections sitting in water.

Look at the Panel

A burning smell, buzzing, heat, scorch marks, or frequent breaker trips requires professional attention. Do not remove the panel cover or repeatedly reset a breaker to keep a circuit running.
