Smoke Detectors Are an Electrical and Life-Safety System
Smoke alarms need to be present, correctly located, tested, and maintained. In many California homes, interconnected hardwired alarms with battery backup provide earlier warning than isolated, battery-only devices.
When Replacement Is Due
Replace an alarm at the end of its service life, after repeated nuisance alarms, or when it fails a test. Do not mix incompatible alarm models or assume a new device will work with old interconnect wiring.
Hardwired vs. Battery-Only
Hardwired alarms receive power from the home's electrical system and typically include a backup battery. Interconnected devices can sound together when one detects smoke. A licensed electrician can identify the circuit, confirm the interconnect conductor, and replace devices with compatible equipment.
Placement and Testing
Alarms should be installed according to the current manufacturer's instructions and applicable California requirements, including locations near sleeping areas and on required levels. Test alarms regularly, replace backup batteries as recommended, and keep the sensing openings free of dust.
Do Not Disable Nuisance Alarms
Frequent alarms can result from dust, cooking, humidity, age, or a device problem. Removing the battery creates a dangerous gap. Find the cause and use an appropriate replacement or relocation plan.
