A Tripping GFCI Is a Safety Signal

A GFCI, or ground-fault circuit interrupter, shuts off power when it detects current taking an unintended path. That path can involve moisture, a damaged appliance, faulty wiring, or a problem farther downstream on the same circuit.

Safe Checks for a Homeowner

Unplug appliances connected to the affected outlets and press RESET once. If it resets, reconnect devices one at a time. A damaged cord, outdoor tool, refrigerator, dishwasher, or appliance exposed to water may be the cause. Check for visible moisture, cracked covers, or signs of heat without removing the outlet.

When Resetting Is Not Enough

If the GFCI trips immediately with nothing plugged in, will not reset, feels warm, or shows discoloration, stop using the circuit. The problem may be a failed device, reversed line/load wiring, moisture in an exterior box, or a fault in another outlet protected by the same GFCI.

Common Locations

GFCI protection is commonly needed in bathrooms, kitchens near sinks, garages, outdoors, laundry areas, unfinished basements, and locations exposed to water. Local requirements depend on the installation and applicable electrical code.

Never replace a GFCI with a standard outlet just to stop the tripping. A licensed electrician can locate the fault, test the circuit, and restore protection correctly.
